5 Quick Ways to Improve Your Squarespace SEO in 2025

If you're feeling frustrated that your Squarespace site isn’t ranking on Google the way you hoped, you're not alone. The good news? There are some relatively fast and meaningful ways to improve your SEO—without turning your life upside down.

Why trust me?

I’ve built more than 250 Squarespace websites (after 6 years building WordPress and Shopify sites before that). I’m certified by SEOSpace as an SEO expert for Squarespace sites—and recently recognized as one of the top experts in Squarespace SEO.

Let’s get into it: here are 5 fast ways you can make a real impact on your SEO.

Improve Squarespace SEO Quickly in 2025

1. Define Your Keywords

(Seriously—This Is Step One)

Before you tweak anything on your site, you need to get clear about what you’re trying to rank for.

Without defined keywords, you're basically driving without a map. And worse—you might be accidentally competing against yourself.

  • Focus on specific keyword phrases with good search volume but relatively low competition.

  • Use a tool like SEOSpace to find these opportunities.

  • Assign different keywords to different pages of your site—your homepage, services page, blog posts, etc.—to avoid "cannibalizing" your own rankings.

2. Optimize Your Metadata

(Titles and Descriptions Matter At Leas As Much As You Think)

Squarespace lets you input meta titles and descriptions for every page—but it doesn’t tell you how to do it well.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Page Titles: 50–60 characters. Include your primary keyword near the beginning.

  • Page Descriptions: 140–160 characters. Make them enticing but informative.

  • Don't overstuff: Google knows when you're keyword stuffing and it can hurt you.

  • Pro move: In Squarespace, go to Settings → Marketing → SEO Appearance and check that Squarespace isn't auto-adding extra branding to every page title.

If you get your metadata dialed in, you're ahead of most small business websites already.

3. Make the Most of Your Images

Large, unoptimized images can slow down your site—and Google hates slow sites.

Here’s what you should be doing:

  • Resize your images before uploading. (Header images ~2000px wide, standard content images ~1000px.)

  • Compress file size under 250kb using tools like Compressor.io.

  • Use the right file type: JPG for photos, PNG for logos or transparent backgrounds.

  • Don't forget your Alt Text: Add your page’s primary keyword into the alt text of at least one image on each page (naturally, not spammy).

4. Fix Your Headings

(Because Google Pays Attention)

Many people don't realize how important headings are for SEO.

Here’s the basics:

  • Only one H1 per page. (That's your page's main title.)

  • Include your full keyword phrase in the H1 tag.

  • Use H2s, H3s, and H4s naturally throughout your page to organize content—and try to work your keyword into at least one of those as well.

If your headings are messy or nonexistent, Google will have a harder time understanding what your page is about.

5. Make Sure Every Page Has at Least 300 Words

Gone are the days when "keyword stuffing" alone could help you rank.

Today, content depth and relevance matter.

  • Every page on your site should have at least 300 words of real content.

  • More isn't always better. You don’t need a 5,000-word blog post unless it's genuinely useful.

  • Focus on being clear, helpful, and addressing real questions your audience has.

💬 Think about it this way: if your page doesn't have enough information to answer someone’s question, why would Google rank it?
